WASH Facilities at DHA Lahore

10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Lahore, Pakistan
Islamic Development Bank

In November 2019, the Able Plus conducted a research study to investigate water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities provided to students with disabilities at 7 academic institutes of Defence Housing Authority, Lahore (ranging from primary school to college level) The recommendations for a specialized washroom included: 1. Entrance with a proper ramp instead of stair/s 2. The washroom size MUST be 5 by 10 at least. 3. WC and flush system both in the washroom. The flush system is required by people of short heights. WC should have bar handles and a shower on both sides to cater to both right-handed and left-handed students. Ideally, bidets should be installed for those who have a disability of both hands. 4. The floor of the washroom should not be slippery for clutch users, the visually impaired (VI), wheelchair users, and those having a limp (as they can lack the foot grip on the slippery floor). The selection of floor tiles should be taken care of. 5. The height of the washing point should be according to the person sitting in a wheelchair 6. The door should open outside instead of inside 7. Additional fixtures should be 2 feet high to support wheelchair users and short-sighted students.
